Sadia Sultana Sharmin - A Tale of Hope: Sadia's Path to Possibility

16 January 2013 (Age: 12)

Sadia came from a family with a father, Abi Rahman, and a mother, Mohsena Khatun.  They struggled to make ends meet, particularly after Sadia's father remarried and left, turning their world upside down. They haven't had any contact with their father. Sadia shared, “Since then, my mother has been working as a house maid.” Their mother, Mohsena, juggled between work and caring for her children. "Some days were tough," she admitted. "But I had to do whatever it took to keep my children fed and safe," she explained, her eyes reflecting the hardships she endured.

Sadia said’ “If my mother worked one day, she couldn't work the next day. Every day was a struggle to live and eat," she added with a sigh.

“My mother sent me to work in a house. She said if I work, at least I can eat and survive. But If I made a small mistake there, I would be beaten badly or abused verbally. When I told my mother, she would say, "What can I do? Just be patient. They never allowed me to go home.” Then, one day her mother rescued her from that house.

At a certain point Sadia's mother realized that she couldn't manage alone. That's when they found refuge at Umbrelă Foundation. "I never went to school before," Sadia shared, her face lighting up. "But now, I'm learning so much," she said with a smile.

At Umbrelă, Sadia and her brother found a safe haven where they could study and grow. "We're doing much better here," she said gratefully.

Since arriving at Umbrelă, Sadia has embarked on a remarkable educational journey. She said, "Under the guidance of my first teacher, I learned many things before enrolling in school. I am still learning gradually.” Now in class two, she enjoys the simple companionship of her classmates, feeling a sense of belonging with her newfound siblings.

"Teachers come to teach us at Umbrelă home," Sadia shared enthusiastically. "And sometimes we all go on a tour. We have a lot of fun together."

At Umbrelă, Sadia's daily routine is filled with joy and nourishment. "We eat well here," she beams. "Every day, we get milk, eggs, and different meals—like fish, chicken or meat, and vegetables, all planned out for the week. It's something special we never had before."

Reflecting on her journey, Sadia expresses her gratitude: "My brother and I are living a good life here. We have ample opportunities to learn and grow."

With a sparkle in her eyes, Sadia shared her dream, echoing with hope: "I want to be a teacher when I grow up."
