Tania Akter - From Hardship to Hope: Taniya's Journey at Umbrelă
23 June 2010 (Age: 14)
Taniya, a young girl, faced a shattered world when her father, Sultan Ahmed, passed away, leaving her and her five sisters in the care of their mother, Shano Begum. With three sisters already married and one unable to speak, the burden of supporting the family fell heavily on Shano's shoulders. Despite their hardships, Taniya dreamed of education. However, the harsh reality of daily survival meant that even three meals a day were a luxury beyond reach.
Without a safe place to live in her hometown, Taniya sought refuge in others' homes, where she unfortunately faced physical and mental abuse. Back home, Taniya helped her mother graze a cow in the fields and faced much harassment there.
However, life took a turn for the better at Umbrelă, where safe shelter, access to food, opportunities for education, and a better life awaited. Finally, Taniya found solace at Umbrelă. Now, she dreams of a brighter future where education isn't a distant fantasy but a tangible reality. She says, 'I’m getting good food, the opportunity to study, and many facilities for living here. I never wore any nice clothes that I got here. There are many things that were once out of reach have become attainable after coming to Umbrelă. I have been able to pursue studies in various subjects in school and also with dedicated teachers for each subject at home, which was beyond my imagination. My life has vastly improved since then.”
Let's join hands to give Taniya and others like her the chance they deserve to break free from tough times and reach for the stars.
